When old men plant trees

A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they will never sit.

— Greek Proverb

That’s one of my favorite quotes. It speaks to the selfless (and often thankless) act of putting out great effort now, not for our benefit, but for the benefit of the next generation. As is the duty of every parent.

Speaking of trees, we’ve planted 5 new trees in our yard. And, of course, each tree has a name. There’s Johnny (the apple tree), Georgia (the peach tree), Katsumoto and Myagi (the Japanese cherry blossoms), and Oogway (the Chinese wisteria).

It’s been a whirlwind of activity the last month — some good, some not so good. Let’s hit the highlights, shall we:

  • Was attacked by a stray dog — got my hand bit up, not to mention a slight rabies scare;
  • Was swarmed by ants while cleaning out the gutters — got away with only a few bites;
  • Mother-in-law’s health is declining, which puts me deadlifting 150 lbs. 10-12 times a day. Still waiting for the gains to kick in;
  • An EF-1 tornado hit about 400 yards from our house, and I’m pretty sure the wife and I were outside trying to wheel her mom to safety when it hit.

Fun times. Okay, enough with the overy-stressful, boring adult stuff.

I recently ordered the full Star Wars coffee collection from Bones Coffee Co. My kiddo and I are huge fans of the Wookie Cookie and the Twin Sun Tiramisu. We have yet to try the Dark Side Chocolate Truffle because, fresh out of the bag, it smelled like fish. Maybe if I just held my nose…

My official full-size print from issue #4 of By the Time I Get to Dallas came in featuring the panels in which I make a cameo — complete with badass haircut. I don’t have an official name in the comic, so I’m going with Badass Henchman #3.

I ordered the tactical tomahawk from Ancient Smithy to add to my camping / hiking / self-defense arsenal. It’s amazingly well balanced. I’m looking forward to throwing it at my new axe target… as soon as I build it.

I stepped up my lunar game with a new Barlow lens with 2x magnification for my telescope. Now I can see even more detail. So I will be bombarding the interwebs with my psuedo-amateur moon photography.

School’s out for the kiddos, and summer decided to arrive early… which means I will be in a perpetual bad mood for the foreseeable future. But there are some cool nerd things to look forward to. The Oklahoma Comic Con is in August, and Lou Ferrigno (the original Hulk) and Tom Wilson (Biff from Back to the Future) will both be in attendance. Then there’s the Spa-Con in Hot Springs in September, where Seth Gilliam (father Gabriel from The Walking Dead) is in attendance. Plus, Hot Springs has an epic Science Museum, complete with a digital dome planetarium. I’m hoping to make a weekend of it.

I am going to nerd the f*&k out.

That’s all for now, so I leave you with a smattering of cuteness from the Fluffertons.

Until next time…
